Monmouth Spoils Siena’s Senior Day
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Dana Costello scored in the waning minutes of each half as Monmouth shutout women’s soccer 2-0 on the Saints’ Senior Day. The defeat snapped a four-match unbeaten streak for the Saints.
All six seniors started for Siena (7-6-1, 3-2-1) including Schenectady native Erin Kelly who made her third start of the season. Kelly made two saves including an impressive diving stop to her right in the 55th minute to deny a penalty kick.
But red-hot Monmouth (11-1-1, 5-0-1) was too much in running its unbeaten streak to seven matches which now includes five shutouts.
Off a turnover deep in the Siena zone, Costello scored the first of her two goals in the 42nd minute. The tally ended Siena’s shutout streak at an impressive 337:42 spanning three-plus matches.
Costello added a key insurance tally in the 83rd minute, helping to keep the Hawks atop the MAAC Standings. Monmouth out-shot the Saints 18-11 and held a 7-3 edge in corners in the first meeting between the two new MAAC foes.
Siena has two home matches remaining including its next contest Wednesday vs. Canisius at 3 p.m.
