MONMOUTH TOPS LOYOLA MARYLAND 2-0 ON ROAD
BALTIMORE, MD - Monmouth improved to 2-0 on the 2015 campaign behind its second straight shutout, as the Hawks defeated Loyola Maryland 2-0 at the Ridley Athletic Complex on Tuesday morning, highlighted by goals from Erica Murphy (Millstone Township, NJ/Pennington Prep) and Rachael Ivanicki (Marlboro, NJ/Colts Neck).
Following Monmouth's fourth corner kick in the early action, Sophie Centi (Churchville, MD/The John Carroll School) sent a cross into the box in the 17th minute that Murphy nodded into the far netting for her first goal of the season and 11th of her career.
The Hawks doubled their advantage in the 63rd minute, when a loose ball off a deflection found the feet of Ivanicki, who chipped Loyola goalkeeper Colleen Folan from 25 yards away for a 2-0 lead. Ivanicki, who netted the game-winner for Monmouth against Marshall on Friday night, became the first Hawk since Dana Costello in 2010 to net at least a goal in each of their first two appearances in the Blue & White.
Monmouth head coach Krissy Turner stated, "I am very proud of our team for handling the adversity of this match. To get another shutout with three new defenders and a new goalkeeper is terrific."
The Hawks, who have registered 29 shutouts in their last 42 matches, last opened a season with a pair of shutout victories in 2013.
Monmouth outshot the Greyhounds 14-11 overall, including a 10-5 edge in the opening 45 minutes, and held an 11-2 edge in corner kick opportunities (9-0 in the first half).
Goalkeeper Sydney Lavan (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) made four saves in her second straight start, which resulted in a second clean sheet, while Folan was forced to make six saves for Loyola.
Monmouth returns to action on Friday, August 28 when the Hawks host NJIT on Hesse Field at 7:00 p.m., with the match set to be broadcast on ESPN3.
