MONMOUTH TOPS QUINNIPIAC 1-0 ON SENIOR NIGHT
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - In the 11th minute of play, freshman forward Rachelle Ross (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) tallied her team-leading seventh goal of the season to lead the Monmouth University women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Quinnipiac University in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action on Saturday night on Hesse Field on The Great Lawn.
With the victory, Monmouth improves to 11-4 overall and 6-1 in the MAAC, while sophomore forward Alexis McTamney (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional) registered her team-best fifth assist on the season. Ross now has a team-high 17 points in her rookie campaign, while McTamney, last year's MAAC Rookie of the Year, ranks second with 15 points, to lead five Hawks with double-digit point totals.
Monmouth, on a five-game win streak in MAAC play to maintain its position in the top spot of the current league standings, also registered its second straight clean sheet to give the Blue & White eight shutouts on the year.
“A shutout and a victory preserves our place at the top of league standings," stated head coach Krissy Turner, who earned career victory No. 199 on Saturday night. "It was a great way to thank our seniors for their contributions to the program.”
The Hawks netted the game-winning goal at 10:14 when McTamney fired a shot on goal that was saved by Quinnipiac netminder Natalia Grodzki, but wound up at the foot of Ross, who tallied her third game-winner of the year.
Monmouth, which outshot the Bobcats 14-7, also held a 5-2 edge in corner kick opportunities.
Grodzki made a season-high tying eight saves for Quinnipiac, while Nicole D'Agostino (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Hinsdale Central/Pitt) made two stops for the Hawks, including a diving save with just over a minute remaining to preserve the victory.
Monmouth returns to action on Wednesday, October 22, when the Hawks host Iona College in their final home match of the regular season at 7:00 p.m. on Hesse Field.
