MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS 1-0 AT LAFAYETTE
EASTON, PA. - The Monmouth University women's soccer team fell 1-0 at Lafayette College on Friday night. The Hawks' second straight 1-0 loss was MU's third shutout to start the season, as the Blue and White fall to 0-3 on the year.
Lafayette, now 2-0 on the season, broke a scoreless tie in the 71st minute when Jaclyn Giordano found Shannon Neschke for the game-winner.
"We worked extremely hard for 90 minutes and had our most complete game of the season," stated head coach Krissy Turner. "However we fell short in the one category that leads to the win. We will continue to work on our play in the final third of the field and as the season goes on it will become our strength."
Monmouth, which held an 11-4 edge in shots, was paced by Dana Costello's (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) four attempts, whileMonique Plescia (Norwood, N.J./Northern Valley Regional Old Tappan) and Nicole Close (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville) uncorked a pair each. Costello had a shot saved in the 67th minute by a diving stop that LC goalkeeper Lauren Smedley tipped over the bar, while a Close attempt hit the crossbar from 30 yards out.
Ashley Lewis (Freehold, N.J./Freehold [Providence]), in her first career start for the Hawks, surrendered the lone goal while making two stops. Smedley posted the shutout behind four saves for the Leopards.
Monmouth returns to action on Monday, when the Hawks host NJIT on The Great Lawn, at 6:00 p.m.
