September 12, 2010
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Monmouth University women's soccer team, ranked No. 22 in the latest Soccer America poll, dropped its first match of the season on Saturday afternoon, 2-1, at Brown. Monmouth, which opened the 2010 campaign 4-0, cut the score to 2-1 in the 63rd minute on a tally by senior Mary Wilks.

"We had numerous opportunities throughout the game and did not finish our chances," stated head coach Krissy Turner, whose side received 12 votes in the last NSCAA national poll. "We give a lot of credit to Brown, as it put two goals away."

Brown, now 2-2 on the year, opened the scoring with just 18 seconds remaining on the clock before the intermission, as Kiersten Berg notched a goal off an assist from Alison Mullin. The Bears grabbed a two-goal lead in the 57th minute when Berg tallied her second goal of the game, and season, off a feed from Gina Walker.

The Hawks trimmed the lead in half, 2-1, in the 63rd minute when Wilks registered her third goal of the year, off an assist from junior Tracey Biederstadt, her first career helper.

Monmouth outshot the Bears 22-13 in the match, while senior goalkeeper Lia Fierro made 10 saves for the Hawks. Monmouth also held a 10-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities.

Monmouth returns to action next weekend, when the Hawks participate in the Villanova Tournament, hosted by Villanova University, September 17 and 19. The Hawks face the host Wildcats on Friday, at 4:00 p.m., and are set to battle Towson University on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
