MONMOUTH WOMEN'S SOCCER TOPS LEHIGH 1-0
August 29, 2013
BETHLEHEM, PA. - Monmouth University junior back Alexa Freguletti (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) notched her second game-winner in as many games to open the 2013 season, as the Hawks defeated Lehigh University 1-0 at the Ulrich Sports Complex on Thursday night. Senior goalkeeper Ashley Lewis (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Boro) added her second career shutout for the Blue and White, which improves to 2-0 to start the year.
"It was a great effort on the road tonight," stated head coach Krissy Turner, whose Hawks are 2-0 to start a season for the first time since 2010. "We are grinding out results and creating good chances to score."
After a scoreless first half in which the Hawks outshot Lehigh 13-5, Monmouth got on the board in the 71st minute when freshman forward Julie Spracklin (Eastampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) found Freguletti with a quick pass which the back buried home past Mountain Hawks' reserve goalkeeper Ani Nahapetian.
Monmouth, which last posted back-to-back shutouts to open the season in 2010, held a 28-12 advantage in shots, while Lewis made five saves for her second career clean sheet.
"We have a veteran group of defenders this year, who experienced a lot last season as a core group," said Turner. "They are a year older and that experience has served them well."
The Hawks, who have outshot their opponents 44-23 in the first two matches, got six shots tonight from senior Dana Costello (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial), while freshman forward Alexis McTamney (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional) added four shots, including one off the crossbar.
Ashley Blanks made four saves in the first 45 minutes of action for Lehigh.
