Montanye Scores Golden Goal for Warhawks
Senior midfielder Michael Montanye picked the perfect time to score his first collegiate goal. Montanye scored the golden goal just one minute and 30 seconds into overtime as the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men’s soccer team topped Edgewood College 1-0 Friday night at Fiskum Field in Whitewater.
First half possession fell strongly in favor of the Warhawks as they outshot the visitors 16-1. Justin Stanko tested the Eagle keeper with three shots on goal while Sam Novak added two. Edgewood’s lone shot of the first half was on goal and UW-Whitewater keeper Alex Buchman made the save.
The second half was a bit more balanced and both teams had opportunities to take the lead. The Warhawks’ best opportunity of the second half came with six minutes remaining when Kyle Clancy hit a header towards the net that was stopped by the Edgewood goalkeeper.
Buchman was tested again late in the game and made two saves in the final five minutes to preserve the tie and force overtime.
Then it was Montanye’s turn. Some nice footwork and passing by Tom Coull and Sam Novak provided Montanye with his moment, and he took advantage, sliding it over the keeper’s shoulder for the win.
Buchman totaled three saves in the game and earned his first win of the season.
The Warhawks (2-1) will host the University of Dubuque next Wednesday, September 10 in a match beginning at 7 pm at Fiskum Field in Whitewater.
