Moreno Chosen as 2019 Senior CLASS Candidate
OVERLAND PARK, KS – Iona College men's soccer senior Maclolm Moreno has been selected as a candidate for the 2019 Senior CLASS Award. Moreno is one of 30 male student-athletes selected among Division I collegiate soccer programs based on notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
Inside the classroom, Moreno is a double major in finance and international studies. He was named to the Dean's List last semester, achieving a 3.5 GPA. Moreno has held two internships at nonprofit organizations. One worked with refugees in Europe by helping them assimilate to their new environment away from home. The other was an educational nonprofit called SCIP, which provides students from diverse backgrounds with the tools to navigate "Corporate America" through guidance and mentorship. Moreno is a two-time member of the MAAC All-Academic Team and MAAC Academic Honor Roll.
On the pitch, Moreno has started all four years on Iona's backline. He started in all 13 of his appearances in his sophomore season, registering a game-winning goal in an overtime victory over Marist. He also assisted on the game-winning OT goal in Iona's win over Quinnipiac that year. Moreno started all 16 of his appearances last season, helping Iona to the MAAC tournament. The Gaels hosted their first-ever postseason game that season. Moreno set career bests in assists and shots on goal, and at the season's end, he was honored as a member of the All-MAAC Second Team.
Moreno and his team have also helped out both inside and outside the Iona community. He has participated in Lift-O-Ween, raising money for New Rochelle families who are burdened during the Christmas holiday.
The class of 30 candidates will be narrowed down to 10 finalists midway through the regular season. The final 10 nominees will be placed on an official ballot, which will be distributed through a nationwide voting system encompassing media, coaches and fans.
