Mount Drops 1-0 Decision to Temple
Emmitsburg, Md. (August 29, 2013) – The Mount women's soccer team created offensive chances but was unable to convert, falling by a 1-0 final score to Temple at Waldron Family Stadium on Thursday night. The Mount drops to 1-2, while Temple runs its record to 3-0 on the young season.
Jackie Corley and Julia DiGiacomo both registered two shots to lead the offensive charge for the Mount. The scored remained deadlocked at 0-0 until the 43rd minute when Temple's Brandi Ernst slipped a through ball past the Mount defense, finding Alyssa Kirk who fired a shot that goalkeeper Vicky Cocozza got in front of, but was unable to keep out of the net. Kirk was the Owls' top offensive weapon with three of her four shots on goal.
The Mount came within inches of leveling the score at 1-1 when Jackie Glanfield's header caromed off the crossbar off Sam Manson's corner kick in the 63rd minute of play.
After back and forth action in the early going, the Mount picked up its best opportunity to score in the 18th minute when Alicia Mirando found herself one-on-one with Temple goalkeeper Shauni Kerkhoff. Mirando's shot off the breakaway was batted down by Kerkhoff and cleared by a Temple defender before it could roll into the goal.
The Owls broke through to take the lead on their 11th and final shot of the first half.
Glandfield's header off the crossbar proved to be the home side's most dangerous attempt in the second half. The final 25 minutes were played primarily in the midfield with Temple stringing together three shots, none that were on target and the Mount taking zero shots.
The Mount's defense was able to hold the Owls to seven shots, zero of which were on goal in the final 45 minutes of the game.
Kerkhoff was called upon to make three saves for Temple to pick up her third shutout of the season. For the Mount, Cocozza kept her team in the game by making nine first-half saves, while Rachel Bourne did not need to make a save to keep Temple off the board in the second half.
Next on the schedule for the Mount is a trip to Towson to take on the Tigers on Sunday, Sept. 1. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
