Mount Falls at LIU Brooklyn
Brooklyn, N.Y. (October 12, 2014) -- The Mount St. Mary's women's soccer team suffered a tough 5-1 road loss at reigning Northeast Conference runner-up LIU Brooklyn on Sunday afternoon at LIU Field. Junior midfielder Emma Blair scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season in the first half for the Mount.
The Mountaineers (1-13-0, 0-3-0 NEC) fell behind early when Caroline Kaplan found the back of the net 2:15 into the game for LIU Brooklyn (4-10-0, 2-1-0 NEC). Just 1:17 later, however, Blair found the equalizer for the Mount, leveling the score at 1-1.
Madison Gomez, who tallied a pair of goals in the game for LIU, scored her first of the day in the 12th minute to put the Blackbirds ahead for good. The score remained 2-1 until Jenn Peters scored with 32 seconds left in the first half to give the home side a 3-1 advantage heading to halftime.
The Blackbirds continued the offensive pressure in the second half and added insurance goals from Jen Spicer in the 67th minute and Gomez in the 74th minute.
The Mountaineers recorded double-digit shots for the fourth time on the year, picking up a season-high 14 on Sunday including nine in the first half. Blair and Nicole Vallely fired three shots apiece to pace the Mount's offense.
In goal, Rachel Bourne made one save in the first half before Vicky Cocozza turned away four shots in the closing 45 minutes. On the other end, LIU's Jessica Montrose registered four saves, yielding just the one goal to Blair in the opening minutes.
Next weekend, the Mount hosts Bryant on Friday, Oct. 17, and Robert Morris on Sunday, Oct. 19.
