Mount Falls on Late Goal at Sacred Heart
Fairfield, Conn. (October 18, 2013) -- A goal in the final eight minutes spoiled a Mount St. Mary's comeback versus Sacred Heart on Friday night in a tough 2-1 road defeat in Northeast Conference play.
After falling behind in the second half, senior Kate Murphy delivered the equalizer in the 67th minute, but the Mount (3-7-3, 1-2-1 NEC) yielded the game winner to Sacred Heart (5-9-0, 2-2-0 NEC) in the 83rd minute in Friday's loss.
For the Pioneers, Kristin Verrette scored in the 54th minute, then assisted on Corina DaSilva's strike in the 83rd minute.
SHU outshot the Mount, 12-4, in the first 45 minutes, but Mount goalkeeper Rachel Bournemade three saves to keep a clean sheet in the first half. In the opening 10 minutes of play, shots by Ragan Cote and Nicole Vallely were saved by Pioneer goalkeeper Sydney Judkins, who finished with seven saves for the day.
Sacred Heart had its best scoring opportunity in the first half on Verrette's shot that hit the post to keep the score deadlocked at 0-0 heading into halftime.
The Mount fell behind early in the second half when Verrette beat Vicky Cocozza from 18 yards out to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 deficit.
Over the next 13 minutes, the Mount turned up the pressure, taking a flurry of shots. The fifth shot during the stretch finally broke through with Murphy scoring from 25 yards out off an assist from Jackie Glanfield, who had checked into the game just four minutes earlier.
It was Murphy's second goal in the last three games and the third of her career.
The score stayed 1-1 until Verrette sent in a cross that was headed into the back of the net by DaSilva with just 7:44 remaining in the game.
Sacred Heart was able to escape the rest of the time without giving up a shot to the Mount.
After being outshot in the first half, the Mount responded with seven shots to Sacred Heart's six in the final 45 minutes. Cote took a team-high three shots, including two on goal for the Mount.
On Sunday, the Mount heads to Bryant to take on the Bulldogs at 11 a.m. trying to get back into the win column.
