Mount Falls to LIU Brooklyn, 1-0, in OT
Emmitsburg, Md. (November 3, 2013) -- The Mount women's soccer team fell by a 1-0 margin on LIU Brooklyn's golden goal in overtime in Sunday's season finale at Waldron Family Stadium. Before the game, the Mount honored Jackie Corley, Ragan Cote, Keriann McGettigan and Kate Murphy with a senior day celebration.
Shino Kunisawa settled a bouncing ball from eight yards out and slotted a shot to the lower right-hand corner in the first minute of overtime to give the Blackbirds (7-10-1, 5-3-0 NEC) the 1-0 win. For the Mount (4-10-3, 2-5-1 NEC), which concluded its season on Sunday, sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Bourne tied a career high with nine first-half saves.
LIU took control of the game in the first half, holding a 13-1 advantage on shots through 45 minutes.
The Mount had its best scoring opportunity of the first half on Corley's shot that missed wide left of the target. Bourne was able to keep the Blackbirds off the scoreboard with her nine saves, including three in the final six minutes of the first half.
The home side tested LIU goalkeeper Jessica Sexton with three shots in the opening 20 minutes of the second half. Cote's shot sailed wide of the goal and Sexton stopped attempts from Brinley Watts and Meghan Wilson to keep the score tied at 0-0.
For the remainder of regulation, Watts took two more shots and Wilson fired one, but the Mount could not beat Sexton, who picked up three saves on the day. LIU had its chances to win in regulation with 11 shots, including five on target, but goalkeeper Vicky Cocozzastood up to the test with five saves in the second half sending the match between the two sides to overtime for the second season in a row.
Just one minute into the first overtime session, a failed clear attempt by the Mount fell to Kunisawa all alone in front of the net. She brought the ball to her feet and placed it in the bottom right corner of the goal for the win.
For the Mount, Watts led the offense with three shots, two of which were on target. Kunisawa paced the Blackbirds with six shots, with four on goal.
The Mount's senior class left its mark on the program, helping the Mount win 22 games along the way. Murphy is tied for eighth with 72 games played, and McGettigan is tied for third with four career game-winning goals.
