Mount Plays to a Scoreless Tie With GW
Emmitsburg, Md. (September 20, 2013) – The Mount women's soccer team picked up its second-consecutive tie with a double overtime 0-0 draw versus George Washington in nonconference action at Waldron Family Stadium on Friday afternoon. Sophomore Vicky Cocozzarecorded seven saves in the second half and overtime to keep the Colonials off the scoreboard.
Coming off a 1-1 tie against Iona on Sept. 13, the Mount (1-5-2) was able to shut out its opponent for the second time this season and first time since the season opener on Aug. 23 at UMBC. Sophomore Rachel Bourne, who played the first half between the pipes, turned over a clean sheet to Cocozza who preserved the shutout.
The Mountaineers put together a number of offensive scoring threats early in the contest with shots by Sam Manson and Jackie Corley in the first 10 minutes of play. Both attempts were turned away by George Washington goalkeeper Nicole Ulrick, who made four saves in the game.
The Mount, which outshot the Colonials (2-2-2) by a 4-2 margin in the first half, had two more opportunities from Corley in the last 17 minutes of the half, but one was saved and the other sailed high.
In the second half, George Washington picked up the offensive pressure with 11 shots to the Mount's three. From the 60th minute to the 80th minute, Cocozza was called upon to make four saves to keep the Colonials off the scoreboard.
George Washington managed two shots in the final five minutes of regulation that were off target.
In the first overtime session, Cocozza made two saves as the Colonials held a 6-1 advantage on shots. The final overtime period was played primarily in the midfield with neither team recording a shot.
Corley finished with a team-best four shots, two of which were on target. Senior Keriann McGettigan and Manson both fired two shots for the Mount. George Washington outshot the Mount, 19-8, led by four shots apiece from Alex Neal, Kristi Abbate and Jane Wallis.
The Mount will host Delaware State for the last nonconference game of the season at Waldron Family Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 22, at 1 p.m.
