Mount Tripped Up By Central Connecticut, 2-0
Emmitsburg, Md. (October 27, 2013) – The Mount women's soccer team was handed a 2-0 defeat by visiting Central Connecticut State in Northeast Conference action at Waldron Family Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Mount (4-9-3, 2-4-1 NEC) had chances to score, but could not convert, while the Blue Devils (5-11-0, 3-3-0 NEC) netted two goals in the second half to take the victory. Laura Gomez scored in the 54th minute before Jewel Robinson secured an insurance goal in the 70th minute for CCSU.
In the 10th minute of play, senior Ragan Cote had her shot from eight yards out saved by CCSU goalkeeper Nikola Deiter. Cote sparked the Mount's offense with a team-best five shots, including three on target on the afternoon.
During the first half, Central Connecticut held an 11-4 advantage on shots, but only four were on target. Mount's first-half goalkeeper Rachel Bourne made all four saves to keep the game deadlocked at 0-0 heading into halftime.
Vicky Cocozza, who took over for Bourne in the second half, was busy in her first six minutes of action with saves on shots by CCSU's Kerriann Welch, Tori Sousa and Robinson in the first 5:43 of the half. Cocozza finished with six saves on the day.
The Mount appeared to have taken a 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute when Jackie Corley found the back of the net on a rebound from Cote's initial shot. The play was ruled offsides, however, to keep the game scoreless.
Just over two minutes later, CCSU got on the scoreboard on Gomez's finish from point-blank range in the 54th minute. Senior Kate Murphy tried to pull the Mount even with three shots in the next 15 minutes of play, but one sailed high, and Deiter was able to save the other two.
Still clinging to a 1-0 advantage, Robinson carried the ball down the right side of the field and beat two defenders before slipping her shot past Cocozza for a 2-0 lead with just over 20 minutes to play.
Cote came within inches of cutting into Central Connecticut's lead when she fired a shot from inside the six that hit Deiter in the face and bounced back to Cote, who missed wide right with her rebound attempt.
CCSU, which held a 23-12 advantage on shots, was able to run out the clock to hold on for the win. Tori Sousa took a team-high three shots for CCSU, while Murphy helped the Mount's attack with three shots of her own.
The Mount will host senior day on Sunday, Nov. 3, when LIU Brooklyn makes the trip to Waldron Family Stadium for a 12 p.m. game.
