Mount Tripped up by Lehigh in Home Opener
Emmitsburg, Md. (August 31, 2014) – Playing in front of the home crowd for the first time this season, the Mount St. Mary's women's soccer team conceded a first-half goal and was never able to find the equalizer in a 1-0 loss to Lehigh at Waldron Family Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
For the Mount (0-4), freshman forward Jordan Fine took a team-high two shots in 40 minutes of action, while Lehigh's Darby Wiegand scored the game's only goal off an assist from Grace Correll.
The Mount was able to keep the Mountain Hawks (2-0) off the scoreboard until Wiegand's strike in the 43rd minute. On the offensive buildup, Correll carried the ball down the left wing and swung in a cross that found Wiegand, who beat a diving Rachel Bourne for the goal.
In an attempt to level the score, the Mount turned up the offensive pressure in the final 15 minutes of the game. Fine fired two shots in the last eight minutes, including one to the lower left-hand corner from 18 yards out that forced Lehigh goalkeeper Ani Nahapetian to make a sprawling save to keep the Mount scoreless.
In net for the Mountaineers, Bourne picked up three saves in the opening 45 minutes, andVicky Cocozza added five more saves in the second half. Nahapetian stopped one Mount St. Mary's shot in the contest for Lehigh.
Lehigh put nine shots on target on the afternoon, three of which came off the foot of Wiegand, with another two coming from Danielle Salans.
The Mount returns to Waldron Family Stadium on Friday, Sept. 5, for a 7 p.m. game versus Penn.
