Mount Women’s Soccer Handed 5-1 Loss By RMU
Emmitsburg, Md. (October 19, 2014) – The Mount St. Mary's women's soccer team dug itself a first-half hole and never recovered in a 5-1 loss to Robert Morris on Sunday afternoon at Waldron Family Stadium in Northeast Conference play.
Freshman forward Jordan Fine tallied the goal for the Mount (2-14-0, 1-4-0 NEC) in the 12th minute, but the Colonials (4-10-2, 2-2-1 NEC) scored three times in the first half and twice in the final 45 minutes to put the game away. Francesca Springer notched goals in both halves to lead the visitors.
Springer's fifth-minute goal gave Robert Morris an early 1-0 advantage. The lead was short lived, however, with Fine answering on the other end in the 12th minute to level the score. The freshman from Taneytown, Md. fought through a pair of RMU defenders and slotted the ball to the bottom left corner of the net from six yards out for her second goal of the season.
The score remained knotted at 1-1 until Lauren Sulkowski shielded her defender and ripped a shot past Mount goalkeeper Vicky Cocozza for a 2-1 RMU advantage in the 32nd minute. Just over six minutes later, Kasia Bak netted the Colonials' third goal for a 3-1 lead heading into halftime.
The Colonials put the game out of reach with goals from Springer and Katie Austin in the 53rd and 75th minutes, respectively.
Becky Schoenecker registered three saves for Robert Morris in the first 85 minutes, while Chelsea De Jager made two additional saves in the final five minutes. On the other end, Rachel Bourne stopped one RMU shot and Cocozza turned away four shots.
Offensively for the Mount, which was outshot by a 16-12 margin, Fine and Alicia Mirando picked up three shots apiece.
The next time the Mount is in action is Friday, Oct. 24, at Saint Francis University in Loretto, Pa. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
