Mount Women's Soccer Stopped By Sacred Heart
Emmitsburg, Md. (October 26, 2014) – The Mount St. Mary's women's soccer team fell victim to a flurry of first-half goals in a 4-0 home loss to Sacred Heart at Waldron Family Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Mount, which was playing its home finale, held a Senior Day celebration prior to the game.
The Mount (2-16-0, 1-6-0 NEC) could not bounce back from a big first half by Sacred Heart (7-8-2, 2-3-1 NEC) that included four goals in a 12-minute span.
Emily Dawidczyk began the scoring with goals in the 18th and 20th minutes, before the Northeast Conference's leading scorer Kristin Verrette netted two more in the 26th and 30th minutes for the Pioneers.
The Mountaineers produced chances in the first half with two corner kicks and four shots, but SHU goalkeeper Talia Schwartz made two saves in the opening 45 minutes to keep the Mount off the board.
After the Mount was outshot by a 13-4 margin in the first half, play was more balanced in the final 45 minutes with both teams taking seven shots. The Mountaineers again had offensive opportunities with seven second-half corner kicks to SHU's one, but could not finish.
Senior Alicia Mirando and junior Brinley Watts tied for the team lead with three shots apiece on the day, while junior Emma Blair also finished with two shots. For the Pioneers, Verrette paced the offense with a game-high nine shots.
In goal, junior Vicky Cocozza registered five saves for the Mount, and Schwartz stopped three shots for Sacred Heart.
The Mount wraps up the season on the road at Central Connecticut State on Sunday, Nov. 2, at noon.
