Mountain Hawks fall at Colgate in PLT
October 31, 2017
"It's really tough to lose two years in a row in overtime," said Lehigh head coach Eric Lambinus. "I'm proud of the team and how they battled. It was a tough game; I thought Colgate played really well. We hung in there in the first half and I thought we turned it around a little bit in the second. We had a couple really good chances we didn't finish and they hit a ball from outside. It was a good shot from distance and you have to give them credit."
Colgate outshot Lehigh in the first half, 14-4. After a Lexi Chang shot less than a minute in, the Raiders recorded 12 of the next 13 shots, but Miller made six saves in that span to help keep the game scoreless. Late in the half, the Mountain Hawks created quality chances of their own, including off a corner kick when the ball sailed directly in front of the goal, but the Colgate defense cleared the ball out of harm's way. Senior Grace Correll added a shot in the 44th minute, but Raiders' goalkeeper Kelly Chiavaro made the stop.
The Raiders tallied three of the first four second-half shots, but the Mountain Hawks responded by outshooting Colgate 5-2 the rest of the stanza. Two of Lehigh's best chances came in the 64th and 76th minutes, both off the foot of sophomore Annika Jansa. First, Jansa took a free kick just outside the box, but it sailed just high. Later, she took a shot off a corner kick that looked ticketed for the left corner of the goal, but somehow stayed out.
In overtime, Miller made a save in the 96th minute, but she couldn't stop Emily Crichlow's shot at the 98:14 mark as it was placed perfectly into the top left corner of the goal to give Colgate the 1-0 victory.
Final shots were 22-10 in favor of Colgate while the Raiders held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks. Miller's nine saves came across Colgate's Chiavaro, who tallied three.
"Our seniors this year have been phenomenal. They've been big parts of everything that we've done and I'm really proud of them," said Lambinus. "I'm happy I've gotten a chance to coach them for as long as I have. I told the team before the game that it's not about the results and it's not about the wins and losses. Rather, they're going to remember the times together - the tough times and the good times.
"They really enjoyed everything they did. They enjoyed playing for Lehigh soccer and I enjoyed coaching them. I'll remember the way they practiced, the way they trained and the way they represented our institution and Lehigh soccer. I'm really proud of everything this group has done, especially our seniors."
