Moura Goal Leads Eagles Over No. 7 SNHU
MANCHESTER, N.H. – Sophomore Raphael Moura (Danbury, Conn.) found the back of the net with a header off a cross from senior Joe Baccielo (Stratford, Conn.) to give the Post University men’s soccer team a 1-0 victory over No. 7 Southern New Hampshire on Thursday night. The victory marks the Eagles’ first-ever win over a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Top 25 team since they joined NCAA Division II in 2002.
Post (1-0-0) controlled the ball for most of the first half and held a 5-2 advantage in shots during the period. Freshman Armando Filho (Cataguases, Brazil) and junior Jose Monterozza (Los Angeles, Calif.) launched back-to-back shots in the 27th minute but both were blocked before reaching the keeper.
An offside call on Southern New Hampshire (0-1-0) in the 37th minute gave Post the ball. Baccielo crossed the ball from the left of the goal at 36:41 to a leaping Moura who headed it in for the lone score.
The Eagles had a chance early in the second half to extend their lead. Baccielo launched a shot off a corner by senior Jon Dzurilla (Torrington, Conn.) but Dom DiMaggio made the save.
Freshman Jon Hanlon (Centereach, N.Y.) made a tough save in the 89th minute to seal the victory. Pierre Omanga shot a header from close range as Hanlon stretched to narrowly punch the ball away. The Penman outshot the Eagles 10-4 in the second half and 12-9 overall.
Baccielo had a team-high three shots for Post. Hanlon recorded three saves in his first-career start. The win also marks the first time the Eagles have defeated Southern New Hampshire and their first season-opening victory since 2008.
Post will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept 11 on the road against Franklin Pierce. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
