MSU claims first home win, dumps 'Belles 1-0
WICHTA FALLS, Texas – The ball finally bounced the Mustangs’ way Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.
Junior midfielder Emily Saville tallied the lone goal of the match when she followed Katy Catney’s free kick off of the cross bar in the 32nd minute to give Midwestern State its first home win of the season.
“I felt like we played a good game,” MSU coach Jeff Trimble said. “We’ve got to continue working on finishing. We were in great position and just a step away from scoring more goals throughout the game.”
With the win, the Mustangs moved to 4-8-3 on the season and to 4-4-3 in Lone Star Conference as MSU obtained sole possession of fourth place with 15 points trailing West Texas A&M (21 points), Incarnate Word (21) and Angelo State (19).
Midwestern dominated the run of play producing 23 shots to 10 for the Rambelles including a 10-6 edge in shots on goal.
“We knew they were hurt at keeper and we wanted to put them under pressure,” Trimble said.
ASU goalkeeper Danielle Edwards suffered an injury in pregame, but played the entire first half before giving way to Natalie Nielsen who exited with an injury of her own 8 minutes into the second.
But MSU took advantage of a restart in the 32nd minute resulting from a yellow card issued to ASU’s Caitlyn Conaway. Catney drove the ball toward the keeper but it drifted high and squarely into the cross bar. Saville scrambled to the front of the net to tap the ball in.
Angelo State generated a pair of opportunities in the closing 15 minutes. Kayla Gregory broke free in the 76th minute and beat MSU goalkeeper Mallory Whitworth with a shot to the far post.
The ball deflected low off of the post and right back to Whitworth who collected it before charging ASU forward Sierra Anderson could reach it.
Anderson found space at the top of the MSU box in the 84th minute, but served a shot just over the cross bar.
Trimble lauded the play of his back line as Berklee Dressler, Hanna Staley, Megan Barnhart, Morgan Hannon, Anna Molen, Jo Vaughn and Alexandra Copp played a key role in MSU’s fourth shutout of the season.
Whitworth gobbled up six saves for her 20th career clean sheet which matches former standout Elli O’Dwyer for the most in program history.
Midwestern State continues its four-game home stand with matches against Texas Woman’s University and Texas A&M-Commerce next weekend at the MSU Soccer Field.
Angelo State fell to 8-6-1 and 6-4-1.
