EAST LANSING, Michigan (SMU) - The SMU men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to 10th-ranked Michigan State off a goal in the 78th minute on Friday afternoon at the DeMartin Soccer Complex on MSU's campus.
"I thought we played well and were able to create a good number of opportunities tonight," Head Coach Tim McClements said. "Overall it was a disappointing loss for us, but I am happy with the effort."
MSU defender Ryan Keener found the back of the net for his first goal of the season off a corner to give the Spartans the late lead and the victory. Jason Stacy was credited with the assist.
Junior Idrissa Camara and sophomore Stanton Garcia led the Mustangs with a pair of shots on goal apiece, with both of Garcia's chances finding the frame.
"We did an excellent job putting on pressure and I thought the number of chances we developed in the oppening half were quality," McClements added.
In the scoreless opening frame, SMU held the 5-4 advantage in shots including a pair on goal from freshman Jordan Cano and Garcia. The half also saw a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks for the Ponies. It was the Spartans, though, that had the edge in shots and corners in the second half.
Overall, the Mustangs were outshot 15-8, including 8-4 in shots on goal, with goalkeeper Michael Nelson registering seven saves off MSU's chances.
"Our young players fought hard and did great," McClements said. "I see a lot of potential in this group and thought they did an excellent job putting pressure on Michigan State."
The Mustangs are back in action on Sunday when they travel southeast to Ann Arbor to take on Michigan. The match is set for 1 p.m. CT and live stats will be available.
