Navy Women Defeat Lehigh in Overtime, 1-0
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Freshman Kaylie Davidson (Oceanside, Calif.) scored a game-winning goal in overtime to lead Navy (15-1, 3-0 PL) past Lehigh (2-10, 0-3 PL), 1-0, on Sunday in a Patriot League contest at Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. Davidson netted the goal in the 99th minute as Navy won its 15th straight game, the longest active winning streak in the nation.
Junior midfielder Brittany Fruin (McLean, Va.) sent a corner kick into the box in the closing minutes of the first overtime period and sophomore defender Jade Seabrook (St. Paris, Ohio) headed the ball to Davidson who struck the ball on the volley into the right side of the net at 98:30.
"We've been very good on our set pieces," head coach Carin Gabarra said. "We tell our team to go after them and we executed it well. We also got better as the game went on today. We continued to fight and pressed more and put more pressure on the ball towards the ending minutes of the game. It was a quality game, but there weren't a lot of quality chances for either team."
Junior goalkeeper Elizabeth Hoerner (Lititz, Pa.) posted her second shutout of the season, making two saves. Hoerner improves her record in goal to 13-1.
Junior forward Ashlynn Soellner (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) led Navy with four shots with two being on goal. Fellow forwards Morgan Dankanich (Glenmoore, Pa.) and Paloma Perez (Mobile, Ala.) had three shots apiece. Dankanich earned the corner kick in overtime to set up Navy's game-winner.
One of Navy's best chances to score in regulation came from sophomore midfielder Rachel Hunter (Raliegh, N.C.) in the 73rd minute, but her shot sailed just high of the cross bar.
Davidson's tally was her second game-winning goal of the season and her second goal of the week. Davidson ranks third on the team with six goals.
Navy led in shots, 22-10, and held a 6-2 edge in shots on goal. Navy outshot Lehigh 8-2 in the first half and 3-0 in overtime.
Lehigh goalkeeper Ali Griffin made five saves as she fell to 1-2 on the season.
The Mids have scored five game-winning goals in the 88th minute or later this season. Navy defeated Lafayette, 3-2, on Friday night on the strength of a game-winning goal by Lily Kraemer (Pitman, N.J.) in the 88th minute.
Sunday marked the first time this season Navy has played an overtime game.
