Navy's Seabrook on Hermann Trophy Watch List
KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Continuing to add to her preseason honors, Navy women’s soccer defender Jade Seabrook was placed on the 2014 Women’s Missouri Athletics Club’s Hermann Trophy watch list, announced by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Wednesday. The Hermann Trophy is the highest honor in college soccer and is the equivalent to college football’s Heisman Trophy.
Seabrook will be tracked as one of the top women’s soccer college players for the second consecutive year, as she made the watch list last season with graduate Elizabeth Hoerner. The senior defender is the only Patriot League student-athlete to make the watch list.
A two-time NSCAA All-American, Seabrook helped anchor Navy’s backline to one of the best in the nation, holding opponents to a .566 goals-against average, which was 12th best in the country. She also guided the Mids to 14 shutouts in 21 games for the seventh-highest shutout percentage (.667) in Division I.
Seabrook is the third different Naval Academy women’s soccer player to be named to the watch list and only player in program history to be placed on the watch list twice. Navy’s Hoerner (2013) and Lizzie Barnes (2007), both of which were goalkeepers, were also named to the preseason watch list.
Seabrook and 34 other members make up the Women’s MAC Hermann Watch List. Of the 35 members, the St. Paris, Ohio, native is one of eight defenders, including 2013 finalist Abby Dahlkemper (UCLA). Since the inception of the award in 1986, UNC’s Cat Whitehill is the only women’s college soccer player to win the prestigious award as a defender.
Near the end of the collegiate regular season, NCAA Division I coaches that are NSCAA members will vote on their top choices and the lists will be narrowed down to the top 15 players. College soccer fans will also have the opportunity to participate in the selection process, by voting for their favorite semifinalist in November at the MAC Hermann Trophy website, managed by LockerDome.
From that poll of 30, six finalists (three men, three women) will be chosen for the award. The winners will be announced in January.
The Navy women's soccer team is slated to open the 2014 campaign on Friday, Aug. 22, where the Mids will battle UMBC in Baltimore, Maryland. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
