Navy's Second-Half Surge Upends UMBC, 3-2
August 21, 2015
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy women’s soccer freshmen Mary August (Arnold, Md.) and Margaret Woodward (Palm Harbor, Fla.) scored back-to-back goals in the final 10 minutes to help the Mids (1-0) defeat UMBC (0-1), 3-2, in the season opener on Friday at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
Down 2-0 to start the second half, Navy’s junior midfielder Rachel Feldman (Danville, Calif.) came off the bench in the 63rd minute. Feldman then seized her opportunity less than three minutes later as she grabbed possession of a loose ball atop the 18-yard box and sent a shot towards the net. Feldman’s shot grazed off a UMBC defender and hit inside the near post to cut Navy’s deficit to one, 2-1, with 24 minutes to go.
“My mindset coming off the bench was to leave nothing on the field and put my team in the best chance to win the game,” Feldman said. “We are taught to be a fighting team no matter where we are in the game and that mentality definitely helped us overcome the two-goal deficit.”
Navy then built off the momentum that Feldman created in the 83rd minute. The Mids were award a corner kick and sophomore defender Megan Rogers (Orange Park, Fla.) sent in a pass that was punched out by UMBC’s goalie Jen Nance to create a loose ball in the box. August gained possession of the loose ball just outside the six-yard box and lined a hard shot past Nance to the far corner for the equalizer.
With little time to celebrate the equalizing goal, Navy created its final offensive opportunity 1:30 later. Rogers, again, was given the nod for the Mids’ seventh corner kick and sent in high pass in the middle of the 18-yard box where Woodward used all 5-foot-8 of her body to jump above a UMBC defender and head in the eventual game-winning goal in the 85th minute.
“Even though we had great corner kicks throughout the game, we were not finishing like we normally do,” Navy head coach Carin Gabarra said. “Our set pieces are our forte and in the end they were a big reason why we were able to come back.”
UMBC was able to grab an early 2-0 lead in the first half. Retriever midfielders Gabby Boehmer and Jenna Denis each found the back of the net to help build the lead. Boehmer tallied the game’s first goal with a header inside the box and Denis followed up with a strike from 20-yards out atop the box.
Navy led UMBC in every offensive category, including shots, 14-9, corner kicks, 7-4 and saves, 3-1. Navy goalkeeper Dayton Wetherby (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) was credited with the win, relieving sophomore Taygan Grundy (Fremont, Calif.) and tallying two saves in the final 7:49. Grundy started the match and recorded one save on three chances in 82:11 minutes in net. Nance made one save on four chances in the loss.
Navy will have a quick turnaround with a match against Maryland on Sunday at 7 p.m. at Ludwig Field. The match can be seen live on BTN2go.com for $9.95.
