Nevada falls 2-0 at San Francisco
The University of Nevada soccer team opened up the 2013 regular season with a 2-0 loss to San Francisco Sunday afternoon at Negoesco Stadium.
With the loss, Nevada begins the year (0-1 MW), while San Francisco improves to (1-0 WCC).
"We played well today despite the final result," head coach Dr. Melissa Price said. "We created several good goal scoring opportunities and executed many aspects of our game plan. I felt our midfield was mobile and effective. We didn't win the ball in the box and USF capitalized on their crosses. Kelsey played well in the goal in her first start for us."
Senior Kellyn Morning and the Nevada defense came up with an early stop, as the San Francisco offense had a breakaway opportunity that was broken down by the Wolf Pack. San Francisco forward Mackenzie Krieser received a cross from Alex Alugas and headed the ball into the upper right corner of the goal to give the Dons a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute. Wolf Pack freshman Stephanie Martini had a shot on goal in the 29th minute that just sailed wide of the net. San Francisco freshman Lexi Krueger gave the Dons a 2-0 advantage with a goal late in the 29th minute. The Dons led 2-0 at the break.
Nevada was awarded with a set piece right outside of the box at the 67th minute. Wolf Pack mid-fielder Chrisalyn Fonte had a nice shot on goal that was saved by Dons goalkeeper Madalyn Schiffel to keep the score 2-0. Nevada defender Chelsea Fricke placed a head on a corner kick cross from Katherine Davison that went over the crossbar with four minutes to go in regulation. San Francisco held on to win the match 2-0.
Sophomore Kelsey Quintos had six saves in her first start at goalkeeper for the Wolf Pack.
Nevada will return home to face Eastern Washington in the Mackay Stadium opener Friday evening at 7 p.m., before hosting Wright State Sunday at 2 p.m.
