Nevada falls in the closing minutes to San D
The University of Nevada soccer team closed out a two-match road trip with a 2-1 loss to San Diego State Sunday afternoon at the SDSU Sports Deck.
With the loss, Nevada drops to (4-9-3, 2-5 MW) on the season, while San Diego State improves to (8-6-2, 6-1 MW).
"I'm proud of the team today for a valiant effort," head coach Dr. Melissa Price said. "We scored first on a great goal by Chris from Daisha going end line. We were well prepared and had some breakaway chances to win the game. We might have fallen short in the final minutes, which is disappointing, but overall we battled and that will be an important experience as we push to qualify for the Mountain West tournament."
Wolf Pack midfielder Chrisalyn Fonte scored her third goal of the season in the 12th minute to give Nevada an early 1-0 lead. Daisha-Jones Oglesby supplied the assist for her team leading fourth helper on the year. Two minutes later, the Wolf Pack committed a foul in its own penalty box that led to a penalty kick for the Aztecs. Victoria Barba scored on the penalty kick to even the score at 1-1.
San Diego State kept the Wolf Pack defense busy in the second half, recording 19 shots in the final period. The Nevada defense withstood the San Diego State attack with multiple clearances and saves by Wolf Pack goalkeeper Kelsey Quintos. With just under a minute left in regulation, Aztecs forward Kelsey Booth put in a shot past Quintos to give San Diego State the 2-1 win. The Aztecs had 33 shots in the game to five for Nevada. Quintos had eight saves in the game.
The Wolf Pack will return home next week for a pair of home games, taking on Wyoming on Friday night and Air Force Sunday afternoon.
