Nevada Soccer Falls In First Road Test

<p>The University of Nevada soccer team fell to the Sacramento State Hornets 2-1 on the road Sunday afternoon.<br /><br />With the loss, Nevada drops to (1-1, 0-0 MW) on the season, while Sacramento State improves to (1-0, 0-0 Big Sky).<br /><br />“We fought hard and made every effort to win the game,” head coach Dr. Melissa Price said. “In the end, we fell short by not defending well enough as a unit. We will rebound from this loss and move forward with confidence into next week”<br /><br />Sacramento State kept Nevada’s defensive front busy early on with five shots on goal in the opening half. Wolf Pack senior goalkeeper Dana Moreno responded to the pressure, grabbing five saves to keep the Hornets scoreless. Nevada found opportunities as well with three shots on goal. The Pack just missed a chance to go ahead in the final minutes before halftime, as Kelly Gould’s shot on goal bounced off the post. The two team’s went into the intermission tied 0-0.<br /><br />The Hornets looked to take control of the game out of the break. Sacramento State’s Jessica Castano converted the rebound of her initial shot into a goal, two minutes into the second period. Nevada answered back in the 66th minute, as sophomore Madison Lorenzen’s cross from a set piece was headed in by sophomore Chrisalyn Fonte. Fonte’s goal is the first on the year and third for her career. Sacramento State grabbed the momentum and lead with eight minutes to go on a goal by Elece McBride to pull ahead 2-1. Nevada had a final opportunity with a corner kick late that fell short, giving Sacramento State the win.<br /><br />Nevada will return home this week, looking to stay undefeated at Mackay Stadium with a match against Cal Poly Friday at 7 p.m.<br /><br /></p>
