Nevada Soccer Opens New Era With Win

<p>The Wolf Pack soccer team opened up Nevada’s first athletic event as a member of the Mountain West with a 2-0 victory over Hawai`I Friday evening.<br /><br />“I’m proud of the way the team battled tonight and held the lead once we went ahead early,” head Coach Dr. Melissa Price said. “To open our first athletic event as a member of the Mountain West with a win is special.”<br /><br />Nevada jumped ahead of Hawai`I with two goals in the first 38 minutes of the match. Junior Chelsea Fricke recorded her first goal at Nevada in the 18th minute, heading in a 40 yard set piece from Chrisalyn Fonte. Junior Kori Disarufino extended the Pack’s lead with eight minutes to go before halftime, striking an 18 yard shot off the Rainbow Wahine’s goal keeper into the net.<br /><br />Hawai`i had several opportunities to close the gap in the second half with three shots on goal. Nevada’s senior goalkeeper Dana Moreno and the defensive line held firm to preserve the lead. <br /><br />Nevada will hit the road for its first test away from Mackay Stadium, Sunday against Sacramento State at 1 p.m. Nevada won the last match during the 2011 season in overtime 2-1. Junior forward Kori Disarufino scored an unassisted goal in the extra period to claim the win.</p>
