New Mexico women defeat TCU

October 6, 2009
ALBUQUERUQUE, N.M. – Sophomore Jennifer Williams has done it again. The Moreno Valley, Calif., native scored the game-winner in the 46th minute of the match to guide the New Mexico Lobos to a 1-0 victory over the TCU Horned Frogs tonight. For the first time in four years and for the first time since 2002 the Lobos have earned nine wins and improve to 9-1-2 on the season and 1-0 in Mountain West Conference play. The Horned Frogs fall to 7-5-0 on the season and 0-1 in MWC play.

“It feels good right now,” said head coach Kit Vela. “It always feels good to get the first conference win out of the way. The girls played hard and they showed a lot of character in the last minutes. I’m real proud of their efforts.”

The Lobos lone goal was created by a beautiful back-heel pass from junior Alexis Ball that hit Williams in stride at the top of the box. Williams darted her way through the defense and put a ball past Horned Frog keeper Kelsey Walters to put the Lobos on top for good.

Williams scored her ninth goal of the season and 13th of her career. Her 23 points on the season gives Williams sole possession of fifth place all-time at New Mexico for points in a season. Her 13th career goal puts her in a tie for fifth place all-time.

The game-winning goal was Williams sixth of the season and seventh of her career. Williams now has sole possession of second place all-time at UNM for game winners in a season and passed current teammate Ball, for third place all-time for game-winners in a season.

Ball dished out her second assist of the season and the sixth of her career.

The Lobo defense held the TCU offense - who came into tonight match averaging 2.18 goals per game – scoreless and with only four shots on goal. The Lobo backline of senior Jess Quador, junior Elizabeth Lambert and sophomores Gianna Cavuoto and Roxie McFarland were able to hold TCU's  and MWC conference top point scorer, Jordan Calhoun to only three shots with one on frame.

Redshirt Freshman Kelli Cornell picked up her ninth win and eighth shutout of the season. The win puts Cornell in a tie for fourth place all-time at UNM for wins a single season and the shutout puts her in a tie for third place all-time for shutouts in a single season. Cornell made three saves on the night.

The Lobos will finish a five-match home stand against Wyoming on Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. MT and against Air Force on Oct. 10 at 5 p.m. MT. For more information please visit www.GoLobos.com.
