Nicholls downed 3-0 in season opener
THIBODAUX, La. – Unfavorable conditions and a slow start contributed to a 3-0 defeat of the Nicholls State University soccer team by the University of North Dakota Friday evening at the Nicholls Soccer Complex.
Battling on a rain-covered surface, the Colonels (0-1) surrendered two goals in the first 10 minutes of the match. UND (1-0) midfielder Mimi Eiden was the catalyst, assisting on both attempts.
The first score came at the one-minute mark as Eiden struck a beautiful cross that was met by Cassie Giddings. During the ninth minute, Eiden played a long ball over the top of Nicholls' defense and goalkeeper Roosa Hurmerinta was caught out of goal, allowing Katie Moller to slot it in for a 2-0 lead.
The second half was much more promising for the Colonels as they matched the Fighting Hawks with eight shot attempts, including a spinner from senior Haylee Atwell in the 86th minute that struck the left post. Atwell and fifth-year senior Alison Ward combined for six of Nicholls' 12 shot attempts. Kennedy Kidd bodied home a corner kick from Katie Moller in the 57th minute for the 3-0 result.
The Colonels return to action Sunday in a 1 p.m. contest against Grambling at the Nicholls Soccer Complex.
