Nicholls State women defeat Alcorn State
September 30, 2009
THIBODAUX - Senior Jessica Bedford scored a pair of goals and added an assist en route to a six-goal output by the Colonel offense. Meanwhile, the Nicholls defense shut down the Braves as the Nicholls State(w) University women's soccer team (4-6-0) tied the school's single season wins record with a victory over Alcorn State (0-5-0) on Tuesday night.
Since the founding of the program in 1998, Nicholls has reached four wins just twice. First in 2003, and again in 2006. With ten matches left in the 2009 season, the Colonels will have plenty of chances to surpass that mark.
"Coming into this season we weren't really sure what was possible," head coach Dylan Harrison said. "There was some doubt among some people that the potential was there. Now that we've disproved that, hopefully we can continue to play strong and build some momentum heading into the conference season."
The Colonels saw plenty of chances to take the lead in the first half, outshooting the Braves 16-2 in the opening period. However, the Alcorn defense held with Braves' goalkeeper Bronwyn Leeming stopping all five shots on goal in the first half to send it to halftime scoreless.
Nicholls finally broke through less than a minute into the second half, as sophomore Keisha Brown collected a pass from senior forward Alicia Gautreau and driving home a shot over Leeming from just outside the box to make it 1-0 in the 46th minute.
Less than ten minutes later, the Colonels increased their lead to 3-0 as Bedford scored on a penalty kick following an Alcorn handball in the Braves penalty box in the 54th minute and sophomore Sam Etherington took a cross from Bedford and drilled it home in the 56th.
Gautreau fed Bedford again in the 68th minute as the Northamptonshire, England native collected another Gautreau pass and found the back of the net to make it 4-0.
Gautreau would make it 5-0 after breaking past the Alcorn defense on a cross from sophomore Alana DeHart to score on a breakaway in the 69th minute.
Sophomore Carolyn Noble capped the scoring with a breakaway goal of her own in the 86th minute as sophomore Allison Flynn assisted on the sixth and final goal of the afternoon.
The Colonel defense stood strong, limiting the Braves to just three shots total and one shot on goal.
Nicholls now faces a quick turnaround, preparing to host Houston Baptist on Friday and continuing a stretch of three matches in six days and four matches in ten days. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at the Nicholls State Soccer Complex.
