NJIT Blanks Iona, 1-0
HILLSIDE, NJ— Freshman Fiona Wright scored her first collegiate goal and graduate student Amelia Sapirman posted her second shutout of the season in the Highlanders 1-0 win over visiting Iona Friday afternoon at Kean University East Campus Facility.
NJIT improves to 1-1-1 on the young season while Iona moves to 1-2-0.
Sapirman recorded her second consecutive clean sheet (288-minute scoreless streak), notching one save against the Gaels.
Iona used two different goalkeepers Kailey Homoky, who started the for the Gaels, making three saves while Emma Havrilla closed out the final 45, stopping one Highlander shot.
Wright led the match with five shots (two on goal), including her first collegiate goal. Sophomore transfer Tara Walenczyk and Jennifer Callaghan each recorded two shots. Six different Highlanders notched one shot.
NJIT struck first in the eighth minute, as Wright buried her first goal of the season, assisted by Katrina Nguyen-DeMary. Nguyen-DeMary advanced the ball ahead to Wright, settled the ball outside the 18 and tucked away the first goal of the season for NJIT to the left of the Iona keeper.
Sapirman stopped a quick shot in the box to keep the Highlanders ahead with 15 minutes left to play in the first period.
At the half, NJIT held a 10-1 advantage in shot and 3-1 in corner kicks.
In the 59th minute, sophomore Jennifer Callaghan shot went, from the center third of the field for the Highlanders.
NJIT with a late chance to score on a shot by Walenczyk with 1:50 left, sailed just wide.
The Highlanders had a huge advantage in shots for the second straight game, 15-1 and corner kicks 7-1.
NJIT, in a stretch of four matches at home, will host Fairfield on Sunday. Kickoff is slated for 1pm.
