NJIT Blanks Saint Peter’s, 4-0
HILLSIDE, NJ—Four different Highlanders scored, leading NJIT to its second consecutive shutout victory over Saint Peter's, 4-0, Saturday afternoon in women's soccer non-conference action.
NJIT, winners of its last two matches, moves to 2-3 on the season while the Peacocks fall to 1-2 on the season.
The Highlanders recorded a season-best 27 shots, holding a 27-7 advantage (13-3 in shots on goal), including 12-1 on corner kicks.
Senior goalkeeper Amelia Sapirman picked up her second straight shutout victory, notching three saves for the Highlanders. Saint Peter's Victoria Scarratt stopped nine Highlander shots.
The four Highlander goal scorers were: Emily Heckman (41:41), Carly Berdan (50:38), Fiorella Doglio (76:36) and Briana Hackos (81:46).
NJIT had the first scoring opportunity of the game in the eighth minute on a shot wide by junior captain Arianna Gerber.
In the 12th minute, Saint Peter's Carlee Gonzalez put a shot on frame but Sapirman was in position to make the save.
NJIT got on the board in the 42nd minute on a goal by Heckman, her first of the season off a corner kick. Gerber, who was credited with the assist, notched her second assist of the season and seventh of her career.
NJIT led 1-0 heading into the half.
The Highlanders continued its momentum into the second half, adding an insurance goal by Berdan in the 51st minute off a corner kick by Noelle Batista. Berdan received the ball inside the box and tucked it away off the back of her heel.
Continuing to play aggressive, NJIT's Berdan connected on a point blank shot inside the box off a scramble as Saint Peter's keeper made a diving save to keep the ball on the goal line.
NJIT added to its goal totals in the 77th minute, on Doglio's second goal of the season. The play began with freshman Carlitah Cortina slipping the ball behind two Saint Peter's defenders Fiorella placed the ball to the left of the keeper.
After a shot by Cortina in the 82nd minute was saved and punched out by the Peacock keeper, sophomore Briana Hackos collected the ball off the save at the top of the box and put away her first goal of the season.
Berdan led the Highlanders with eight shots (two on goal) followed by McGee, Cortina and Gerber, each with three shots.
NJIT will return to action on September 8 at Fairfield. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm.
