NJIT Picks Up Exciting 4-3 Road Win
NASHVILLE, TN--NJIT picked up an exciting 4-3 road victory at Lipscomb on Saturday evening in ASUN Conference men's soccer action at Lipscomb Soccer Complex.
With the come-from-behind win, NJIT secures a spot in the 2019 ASUN Conference Men's Soccer Postseason Tournament, moving to 6-4-4 overall, 3-1-0 in the ASUN.
NJIT sits in third place in the ASUN standings with nine points and two matches, remaining in ASUN play. The Highlanders will wrap up the road schedule at FGCU on October 26 and conclude the regular season on November 2, hosting Jacksonville.
"We battled against a physically strong opponent on their home field," head coach Fernando Barboto added. "We scored some really nice goals and overall we are very happy to get three points on the road."
Visiting NJIT went down early in the match but NJIT scored the equalizer in the 16th minute, evening the match at 1-1 heading into halftime.
Lipscomb scored first to open the second half and regain the lead, 2-1, but the Highlanders scored late back-to-back goals in a span of 35 seconds, taking a 3-2 advantage.
The match saw its third tie of the contest, 3-3, after a Bisons goal in the 85th minute but the Highlanders answered two minutes later with a goal of their own to hold on to the 4-3 victory.
Lipscomb got on the board early in the ninth minute, as Noah Gulden served in the corner and Honore Kalala puts away his first career goal to give the home team a 1-0 lead.
NJIT evened the score at 1-1 in the 16th minute as Rene White slipped the ball between two Lipscomb defenders, finding, Thomas Radon, who controlled the ball down and chipped a shot with his right foot past the Lipscomb keeper. The goal for Radon is his fifth of the season, which ranks third in the ASUN while White was credited with his second assist of the season.
The Highlanders nearly went ahead three minutes later as NJIT, gained possession after a Lipscomb throw-in. Senior co-captain Andrew Nino found Radon inside at the top of the box but his shot was saved as the Lipscomb goalkeeper came off his line to make the save.
Lipscomb opened the second half with a quick score for a 2-1 lead by John Wynia assisted by Malik Shaheed.
NJIT scored a pair of late goals in a span of thirty-five seconds to take its first lead of the match, 3-2.
Senior Diogo Ferreira blasted a right-footed shot in the 73rd minute from 25 yards out and redshirt junior Rene White scored his ASUN-leading 13th goal of the season after a miscue by the Lipscomb defense, as Juan Zapata played the ball ahead to White, taking on two Bison players and tucking the ball away to the right of the keeper.
White, which ranks tied for fourth in the nation with (13) goals, raises his career mark to 30. His 30 career goals and 66 career points tops the NJIT Division I record books. The 6-foot striker has scored at least one goal in nine of NJIT's 14 matches.
Louis Robinson, the Bisons leading scorer found the back of the net in the 85th minute, knotting the match at 3-3, on a header served into the box by Austin Eager.
NJIT scored the game-winner in the 87th minute as Joao Costa controlled the ball in traffic, off a corner kick by Ferreira, to give the Highlanders a 4-3 road victory.
Freshman keeper Samuel Reisgys registered the win, stopping one Bisons shot.
