NEWARK, NJ--The NJIT men's soccer team returned back into the win column with a 4-2 home victory over visiting Binghamton led by senior Rene White, who scored a pair of goals in the Highlanders win in America East Conference men's soccer action at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.
NJIT snaps a three-match skid, moving to 2-3-1 overall, 2-2-0 in the America East while Binghamton, which entered the match on a two-game win streak, falls to 2-2-0 overall and 2-2-0 in the conference.
The four goals against the Bearcats is a new season-best mark for the Highlanders, surpassing the three goal output against Seton Hall on February 17 to open up the season.
The NJIT offense scored four goals and added three assists, including a two-goal four-point performance from White who returned back to the pitch for the first time since February 17.
White, the active NCAA career goals leader, added two more to his resume in the Highlanders win and now stands with 37 career goals.
Senior Regsan Watkins added a goal and assist while Tomas Jorge opened the scoring for the Highlanders, netting his second goal of the season. Graduate student Zach Halma registered his first assist of the season.
NJIT sophomore goalkeeper Samuel Reisgys picked up the win, stopping a pair of Bearcat shots.
Binghamton got on the board in the 10th minute off a free kick by conference goal leader Noah Lucesher from just outside the top right corner of the box. Lucesher's shot was blasted past a diving NJIT keeper into the top right corner.
A dangerous opportunity for NJIT on a Watkins strike in the 13th minute was saved by Binghamton keeper and cleared away by the Binghamton defense, preventing the ball from dribbling into the goal.
NJIT scored the equalizer in the 23rd minute on a goal by Jorge, his second of the season off a rebound on an initial shot by Watkins.
A minute later, NJIT grabbed a 2-1 lead on a goal by White, netting his second of the season and 36th of his career in the 24th minute, assisted by Zach Halma.
Watkins scored the Highlanders third goal of the match, creating his own opportunity and bending his strike to the near post for a 3-1 lead. The goal was his third of the season.
With less than thirty seconds left in the first half, a foul was called on NJIT on interference inside the box and Bearcats Sean Molly put away his first goal of the season on the penalty kick, shooting into the top left corner.
NJIT dominated possession in the first 15 minutes of the second half and had an opportunity to score in the 58th minute off the back heel of White, whose shot went over the Binghamton defense hitting the crossbar.
With a minute to play, White dribbled through three Binghamton defenders, netting his second goal of the game on a left-footed shot in the bottom right corner to give the Highlanders a 4-2 lead.
NJIT will return to action on Saturday at 2pm when the Highlanders host Drexel in a non-conference match on Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.
