NJIT Sweeps ASUN Conference Weekly Awards
NEWARK, NJ—After a strong start to the 2019 campaign for the NJIT men's soccer team, redshirt junior Rene White and freshman goalkeeper Samuel Reisgys have been selected ASUN Conference Player and Defensive Players of the Week the league office announced on Monday.
White, a Preseason ASUN All-Conference selection picks up his first ASUN Player of the Week honors this season (second of his career) while Reisgys shares ASUN Defensive Player of the Week with Lipscomb's Noah Gulden.
After a scoreless 90 minutes of action at VCU, White put away the game-winner in the 96th minute to give visiting NJIT it's first-ever win over VCU.
White from Bloomfield scored the game-winner at the 95:58 mark, after receiving a cross from the left side of the field from teammate Thomas Radon and heading home the winner for a 1-0 overtime victory.
The 6-foot forward, has netted four goals through three matches this season and stands at 21 career goals. His four goals and nine points top the ASUN.
Reisgys, the freshman Highlander keeper, stopped five Rams shots Sunday, one-shy of his career-best six saves against Fordham on September 2 while recording his first collegiate shutout.
The Rams earned a penalty in the 46th minute of action when Martin Ngoh drew a foul inside the box but it was NJIT's freshman keeper who denied the shot to keep the match scoreless.
The 6-foot-3 keeper from Rimbach, Germany, sits in second in the ASUN in total saves (16), save percentage (.889) and third in goals against average (0.62).
NJIT (2-0-1) remains undefeated through the first three matches of the season for the fourth consecutive year.
The Highlanders will return to action on Wednesday, hosting Drexel at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7pm.
