NJIT Women's Soccer Wins Fifth Straight

STATEN ISLAND, NY – The NJIT women's soccer team extended its win streak to five with a 2-0 shutout victory over Wagner Friday night.
The Highlanders, marking a program-best five straight wins, improve to 5-3 after starting the season 0-3.
NJIT out-shot the Seahawks (3-2-2) 14-11 in the win.
The goal scorers for the visiting Highlanders were junior Arianna Gerber and freshman Christine Conaghy.
NJIT's Melanie Zrno connected with Gerber 2:29 into the match, giving her a through ball up the left side which Gerber snuck past the keeper.
NJIT had other opportunities in the first half to score, one coming from freshman Jennifer Callaghan who headed the ball just wide of the net of in the 32nd minute.
Gerber almost scored again, taking a shot from outside the box that was again saved by Wagner keeper Delaney Beck.
In the final minute of the half, Beck made another great save, stopping Carly Berdan after she tried to finish a forward pass from Gerber to keep the score 1-0 at halftime.
Katie Viscardi came in for the second half for Wagner, and posted four saves in 45 minutes in goal while Beck made two saves in the first half.
The Highlanders were able to seal the win with an insurance goal by Conaghy, her first of her career. The freshman received a cross from Briana Hackos and finished to the top left corner of the net in the 82nd minute.
Senior Amelia Sapirman posted her third shutout of the season, recording three saves in her fifth win.
NJIT will return to action on Sunday when the Highlanders host Hampton (0-6) at 1pm at Kean University's East Campus Facility.
