No. 10 UW-W Finishes Weekend with 1-0 Win
DULUTH, Minn. - The No. 10 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team is 2-0 for the first time since 2000 following a 1-0 victory Sunday at St. Scholastica on the team's second and final day at the Advantage Emblem Cup Tournament in Duluth, Minn.
Junior forward Karina Rosales (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) finished a three-point weekend with what held up as the game-winning goal in the 22nd minute. She took a throw-in from junior defender Adria Schueler(Wales, Wis./Mukwonago) and finished inside the near post to provide all the offense UW-Whitewater needed.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sara Klimisch (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Indian Trail High School and Academy)faced only two shots, none on goal, to record her second straight shutout.
Over the first 20 minutes, the Warhawks put one shot on goal and had one corner kick opportunity before Rosales struck from the right side, pinning a defender to take Schueler's throw-in and finishing in the lower right corner.
UW-Whitewater nearly struck again two minutes later, but a hard shot by senior midfielder Morgan Beaty(DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) hit the crossbar.
The Warhawks, who played 25 different players during the contest, continued to use their depth to pressure the defense of the Saints (0-1-1) over the final 20 minutes of the first half and the first 15 of the second.
St. Scholastica mounted pressure over the final 10 minutes of the affair, but UW-Whitewater's defense didn't relinquish a shot in the entire second half and limited the Saints' opportunities to tie the match.
Rosales totaled four shots, including two on goal, and senior midfielder Marie Lesperance (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South), freshman forward Anna Boyd (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) and freshman midfielder Jenel Karow (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) each recorded one shot on goal.
Following play, Rosales, Lesperance, senior midfielder Devon Polk and junior defender Lauren Otto(Richmond, Ill./Richmond Burton Community) were named to the All-Tournament team.
The Warhawks return to the pitch Wednesday at Loras (Iowa) at 7 p.m. The two teams last met in the second round of last season's NCAA Tournament, a match that UW-Whitewater won, 3-0, at Fiskum Field.
