No. 10 Warhawks Outlast Concordia (Wis.)
The No. 10 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team scored a goal in each half on their way to a 2-1 victory over Concordia (Wis.) Thursday at Fiskum Field in Whitewater. The game was originally scheduled for Wednesday, but poor weather and field conditions pushed the game back a day.
Carly Pottle (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) nearly gave UW-W a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute but her shot was denied by the crossbar. Jen Wendling (Kenosha, Wis./Kenosha Tremper) corralled the rebound and sent a shot towards net but it was blocked.
The Warhawks made several substitutions at 21:52 and it immediately paid off. Adria Schueler (Wales, Wis./Mukwonago) found Mackenzie Serbousek (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Cedar Rapids Prairie) 73 seconds after she entered the game, and Serbousek scored her first goal of the season for a 1-0 Warhawk lead.
Concordia had an opportunity to tie the game in the 26th minute but Sara Klimisch (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Indian Trail High School and Academy) made a big stop on a shot and was helped out by the post on the rebound to keep the Falcons off the scoreboard.
Another Warhawk substitution in the 65th minute wound up paying off in the same way as the first half.Emily Mouille (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee) entered the game and two minutes later the score was 2-0 in favor of the Warhawks after she scored on a free kick.
Klimisch made another save for the Warhawks in the 82nd minute but as time wound down the Falcons snuck one in the goal with just under two minutes to play for a final score of 2-1.
Klimisch made three saves in the match to improve to 2-0 this season.
Head Coach Ryan Quamme remarked after the game, "We wanted to put closer to 90 minutes together than we did against Wittenberg. I thought we played well, we created a lot of opportunities, we just need to continue to work on our attack and finish a few more."
The Warhawks outshot the visitors 22-8 and earned 12 corner kicks to their one.
With two more games in the next three days it was apparent that keeping fresh legs on the field was part of the Warhawks' strategy. Twenty-six Warhawks saw action in Thursday's game.
The Warhawks (2-1) will host Brooklyn College tomorrow at 6 pm and Carthage on Sunday at 2 pm.
