No. 11 Lady Cougars Shutout Lincoln Memorial
Harrogate, TN – No. 11 Columbus State scored three first half goals en route to a 5-0 win over previously undefeated Lincoln Memorial Friday night in a non-conference matchup at the LMU Soccer Complex in Harrogate, TN. The Lady Cougars improve to 3-0 on the season while LMU falls to 2-1.
Emily Husted, making her first start of the season, wasted no time setting the tempo for the offensive explosion as she scored the first of two goals just 2:04 into the contest. The play started with Kelsey Pelletier and Chelsea Person who were both credited with an assist on the play.
CSU fired off five more shots over the next 17 minutes before cracking through twice in a 41 second span. Nikki Turnbull gathered a punched out ball by the LMU goalkeeper on the left side of the field and scored the second goal of the match. Nearly identical to the previous goal, Shelby Rolling also scored on a failed punch out by Kayla Hanson to give Columbus State a 3-0 advantage just over 20 minutes into the contest.
Tori Hood capped off the string of three straight freshmen notching their first collegiate goal as she chipped the goalkeeper on a breakaway in the 71st minute.
Ten minutes later, Husted knocked in her second goal from just inside the penalty box and gave Columbus State the 5-0 victory.
The Lady Cougars outshot LMU 25-4 and held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Mary Mancin earned the victory playing the first 45 minutes of action improving to 3-0 on the season. Frehsman Meosha Hatcher made her first collegiate appearance in net in the second half picking up CSU's lone save on the game.
Hanson suffered the loss allowing five goals in 83+ minutes of action while making six saves.
Columbus State will have an off day before taking on No. 6 Lenoir-Rhyne in another challenging early season matchup in Hickory, NC. CSU has just a 1-2-2 all-time record versus the Bears including being knocked out of the NCAA Tournament each of the last two seasons. The Lady Cougars picked up their lone win over L-R in 2006, a 4-0 blanking.
Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the Moretz Sports - Athletic Complex
