No. 11 ODU Defeats Georgia State, 3-2 In Overtime On Hopkinson's
No. 11 ODU WINS 3-2 ON HOPKINSON’S OVERTIME GOAL
NORFOLK, VA—ODU sophomore forward Tim Hopkinson’s (Nottingham, England) “Golden Goal” with 7:16 left in the first sudden overtime period lifted the 11th ranked Monarchs to a 3-2 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Georgia State Wednesday night at the ODU Soccer Complex.
The Monarchs have now won six straight matches to improve to 10-2 overall and 6-1 in the CAA, while the Panthers of Georgia State fall to 10-4-1 overall and 4-3 in the CAA.
ODU jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals from Yannick Smith (Hillsborough, NJ.), the nation’s fourth leading scorer with 14 goals on an assist from freshman Ivan Militar( Szeged,Hungary) 15 minutes into the half.
In the second half Gideon Asante (Sunyani, Ghana) scored in the on an outlet pass from Alex De John (Marlboro, NJ.).
The Panthers rallied with two goals in the final four minutes on a penalty kick from Stephen McGill after an ODU foul in the box. Ayokunle Limpkin got the equalizer with 1:30 left in regulation on assists from Stephen McGill and Michael Nwiloh.
In the extra period Asante dribbled baseline then crossed to Hopkinson, the CAA co-player of the Week in front of the net who beat the goalkeeper for the golden goal winner. Asante almost scored earlier in the extra period.
The last time ODU won six in a row was in 2007. Smith leads ODU and the CAA with 29 total points on 14 goals and one assist. Tim Hopkinson is second with 20 points on eight goals and four assists, followed by Gideon Asante with 19 points on five goals and a CAA best nine assists.
ODU hosts Hofstra Saturday night at 7 p.m.
