No. 12 Coastal Carolina Routs VMI, 8-0
LEXINGTON, Va. – The Coastal Carolina men’s soccer team put its high-powered offense on display and showed why they are ranked No. 12 in the nation as the Chanticleers easily routed VMI 8-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Keydets’ Patchin Field.
Ricky Garbanzo and Robby Joes Daniels each scored twice and Top Drawer Soccer Top 100 Freshman selection Tevin Skyers added his fourth of the season before the break to give Coastal a commanding 5-nil halftime lead. The Chants tacked on three additional goals in the second half with Bennett twice finding the net and Jakub Stourac recording his second of the year to provide the 8-0 final.
The victory extends the Chants winning streak to eight games and improves the side to 11-1-2, including a perfect 6-0-0 in Big South play. The defeat knocks VMI to 1-10-1 overall and 0-7-1 in the Big South. Moreover, Coastal extends its conference winning streak to 15 games, dating back to the start of the 2011 season.
Garbanzo and Skyers each had a hand in the first three goals. Garbanzo scored the first and third goals, getting each assist from Skyers, who scored the game’s second goal on an assist from Garbanzo. Coastal’s final two goals in the first stanza came from the foot of Daniels, who was assisted both times by Shawn McLaws.
Bennett scored the first two goals in the second half, getting help from Henrik Robstad and Nick May. Less than one minute after Bennett’s second goal, Jakub Stourac tallied the final marker of the day in the 69th minute off an assist by Matt Risher.
The multi-goal game was the third consecutive for Bennett, who has scored seven goals in the team’s last four outings. The lethal striker now stands tied for eight all-time in the CCU record book with 34 career goals in only 36 games.
The Chanticleers out-shot VMI 25-6, splitting their attempts with 12 in the first half and another 13 in the second period. Coastal put 17 of those tries on goal, while not allowing VMI a shot on frame. Goalkeepers Federico Bertele and Mark Petrus were credited with the shutout, the team’s combined seventh of the campaign.
In all, nine Chants tallied shots as each player on the roster recorded at least 30 minutes of action.
