October 2, 2011
WICHITA FALLS, Texas - No. 12 Midwestern State blasted St. Mary''s (Texas) 4-0 Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.
"The guys expected to win," MSU coach Doug Elder said. "I felt like we could have played better, but we were able to score some goals. I was proud of the effort after a tough game on Friday. We''re happy to get the win."
The Mustangs improved to 7-1 on the season claiming their fourth straight result while stretching the nation''s best home field unbeaten streak to 35 matches dating back to the 2007 season.
MSU''s back line got into the scoring act earlier as outside back Fernando Garza collected a loose ball in the box during the 7th minute and chipped his first goal of the season over St. Mary''s goalkeeper Patrick Kasperitis to stake the Mustangs to a 1-0 lead.
Midwestern took advantage of a corner kick opportunity in the 16th minute as Sam Broadbent served the ball to senior Dean Lovegrove at the top of the box. Lovegrove''s shot caromed off of Kasperitis to the feet of senior center back Ryan Spence, who knocked in his fourth tally of the season to push the lead to 2-0.
The Mustangs dominated the run of play outshooting the Rattlers 31-2 and possessed a 12-0 edge in corner kicks before putting the match away with a pair of goals in the second half.
Sophomore forward VcMor Eligwe knocked in his third goal of the season in the 75th minute and Chase Robertson notched his second goal of the campaign off of a nice combination of passes from Eligwe and Nathan Fitzgerald in the 81st minute.
Midwestern State plays its final two-game road swing of the season next weekend at Eastern New Mexico on Friday and West Texas A&M on Sunday. The Mustangs close with six of their last seven matches in the comfortable confines of the MSU Soccer Field.
"This is a really big weekend for us," Elder said. "If we are able to come out on top, it will set us up for the rest of the season."
St. Mary''s fell to 2-7 on the season.
