No. 13 Terps Battle To 0-0 Tie At Villanova
August 19, 2012

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Junior Shannon Zickler made four saves in her first collegiate start as the No. 13 University of Maryland women's soccer team battled to a 0-0 tie at Villanova Sunday afternoon at the Villanova Soccer Complex.

The tie gives Maryland to 1-0-1 on the season. Villanova also moves to a 1-0-1 record.

"Overall, this was a solid effort - one that we will learn from and get better from," said Maryland head coach Jonathan Morgan. "We held the majority of possession and made Villanova chase us and we finished with a 20-12 advantage in shots. We need to be able to put those chances away and our finishing and confidence in front of the net were not up to the level they needed to be at.

"This will be a growing experience for us, especially our freshmen, who are learning what it takes to compete at the collegiate level. But I thought our leaders did a good job keeping everyone together and scrapping through this game after playing as late as we did on Friday."

The Wildcats started the first half with great energy and had a couple of quality chances, but Zickler, who made her first collegiate start denied those.

But after the match settled down a bit, the Terps dominated large chunks of possession in the first half and dominated with a 7-3 shot advantage and a 10-1 edge in corner kicks for the first 45 minutes of play.

Maryland's best opportunity of the first half came in the 26th minute when the ball bounced around the Villanova 18-yard box for a couple of touches before finding senior Olivia Wagner. She had some free space and let a blast go from 22 yards out, but Wildcat keeper Kelsey Quinn was there to make the save and preserve the 0-0 tie.

The second half saw the Terps continue to edge the Wildcats in shots with a 7-5 advantage, including 3-0 in shots on goal. But Villanova was not without chances in the second half as it had a 4-2 lead in corner kicks.

The Wildcats played with urgency throughout the first overtime period, outshooting Maryland 4-3. Two of the Villanova shots were on goal, but Zickler stood tall and made both key stops.

The tide turned in favor of Maryland in the second overtime as the Terps outshot Villanova 3-0 in the final 10 minutes of play.

Wagner and freshman Ashley Spivey each had shots sail over the crossbar, while freshman Sarah Molina's attempt off of a corner kick by Wagner went right of the frame.

Overall, Zickler was credited with four saves to earn her first career shutout, while Quinn made six for the Wildcats.

"I like our team right now and there are quite a few positives we can take from this game," said Morgan. "I thought Domenica Hodak was tremendous coming into the game to play center back. Having never even trained there before, she did an unbelievable job. Shannon made her first career start and made the plays she had to make to help keep this a positive result."

Maryland returns to action on Sunday, Aug. 26 when the Terps head to Columbus, Ohio, to take on the Buckeyes at 6 p.m. at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
