No. 14 Mavericks Avoid Men’s Soccer’s Upset Bid
GOLDEN – Colorado School of Mines men's soccer stood toe-to-toe with conference leader and NSCAA 14th-ranked Colorado Mesa on Wednesday, yet could not generate the timely score as the Mavericks escaped CSM Soccer Stadium triumphant, 1-0.
The sides were even in shot attempts at 16, while Mines (8-5, 6-3 RMAC) held the advantage in shots on goal, 5-3; however, it was a deep free kick strike just in front of midfield by Austin Jex in the 37th minute that sent CMU (10-2-1, 8-1 RMAC) to its eighth straight win.
Junior Richard Garvey posted a team-high two on-frame tries and senior Tannor Randle, junior Joe Haines and freshman Nikolaus Grotz each had one.
Freshman Josh Clark (4-2) finished with two saves in the full time.
The Orediggers host nearby rival and current RMAC runner-up Metro State at 12 p.m. Sunday in Golden.
Former Mines All-American and current Major League Soccer Rookie of the Year front-runner Tesho Akindele of FC Dallas will be in attendance throughout the game to sign autographs.
