No. 17 Marquette Downs UWM For Milwaukee Cup
MILWAUKEE - Charlie Lyon recorded his fourth straight shutout in goal to lead Marquette University to a 2-0 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer team Wednesday night at Valley Fields.
The Panthers (3-4-0) had their chances, but the 17th-ranked Golden Eagles (4-2-0) scored early and fended off UWM down the stretch to reclaim the "Milwaukee Cup" in front of a spirited crowd of 1,954 - the second-largest in facility history.
"It's a special evening," Milwaukee head coach Kris Kelderman said. "That is what makes it exciting for the players and the fans. It's a great atmosphere whether it's here or at UWM. Tonight they were the better team and they are going to have a good season. I was proud of the guys because we stayed in the game and gave ourselves a chance to see if we could get a result and that is all I can ask for."
Lyon came up with the biggest stop in the 81st minute, guessing the right direction on a penalty-kick attempt by senior Laurie Bell and making the sprawling save to keep the deficit at two goals.
"When you get a penalty kick, you'd like to think it should be a goal," Kelderman said. "But it is what it is, I feel bad for Laurie. No one wants to score more than he does. That could have been a turning point, but at the same time I thought we came out better in the second half. We just have to be better in the attacking box - that has been our thing the last week, week-and-a-half."
Lyon made three saves overall on the night, extending his scoreless streak to 418:39 in the process.
Freshman Petter Ingebrigtsen looked to give Milwaukee a glimmer of hope in the 86th minute, but he hit the post after connecting on a nice through ball from Bell.
Freshman Jonathan Stadler gave one a ride from distance in the 72nd, picking up a turnover in back and rifling one over the cross bar from 35 yards out.
Bell almost had a goal in the 70th as well, but Lyon made a diving save to the post and pushed it just wide after Bell was set up for the blast by junior Declan Rodriguez.
"We have some really good spurts," Kelderman said. "We just need to have more of those and be more consistent throughout the game. We have to get sharper in both boxes. There are some specific areas that we need to get better at, especially when you play a tough schedule like we have been. And we will. I feel really good about my team. Hopefully we learn from experiences like this. Sometimes you learn more from losing than from winning. The idea is to peak at the right time and that is when conference play starts."
The first half was once again the same story as recent losses, with the Golden Eagles taking advantage of the chances they had while the Panthers did not.
Senior Luke Goodnetter cleared one off the line in the opening minutes to prevent a disastrous start, but Marquette still opened the scoring in the 15th minute on a long free kick after a foul.
The Milwaukee defense appeared to breakdown in front of goal, allowing Jack Alberts to head in the long service. C. Nortey doubled the advantage in the 28th minute, back-heeling a nifty goal at the post at the 27:28 mark.
"He's a special player and he's quick," Kelderman said. "You lose him for one step and that is all it takes. He's dangerous ... I wish I had him on my team."
Rodriguez recorded Milwaukee's first shot in the 19th minute, sending it high over the post. The Panthers had two great scoring chances later in the half, only to see Lyon make an impressive save on a one-timer off the foot of Bell in the 26th minute.
Senior Richard Johnson started the next opportunity, sending a long ball to Bell. He found freshman Reid Stevenson streaking in from the wing for the attempt. The ball was past the goalie, but went begging just wide of the right post.
The statistics were relatively even on the night, with Marquette ending with the 15-13 advantage in shots and 5-3 in shots on target. Milwaukee earned five of the seven corner kicks in the match and were whistled for nine of the 21 fouls.
Bell and Rodriguez each had three shots; junior Agustin Rey made three saves in defeat.
The Panthers will have the weekend off but will be preparing for another of their cup games, welcoming Northern Illinois next week Tuesday for the battle for the LeWang Trophy.
