No. 19 UCSD Women Edge Past Stanislaus State
LA JOLLA, Calif. - Nineteenth-ranked University of California San Diego got a 28th-minute goal from senior tri-captain Jordyn McNutt (San Diego/University City HS) and made it hold up to edge past rival Stanislaus State, 1-0, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) women's soccer match at Triton Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
UC San Diego improved to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the CCAA. Stanislaus State, which had suffered its first loss of 2017 at Cal State San Marcos on Friday afternoon, fell to an identical 5-2 overall while remaining a winless 0-2 in league play. UCSD thus bounced back in a big way from back-to-back shutout losses on last week's Colorado trip, by in turn blanking successive foes for a perfect opening conference weekend.
The reigning regular-season and tournament champion Tritons thus shot right back up to the top of the CCAA standings through one week, with one other squad, the aforementioned Cougars of CSUSM, winning both of matches for starters. UCSD has won 16 CCAA tilts in a row going back to 2015 after a perfect 12-0 slate in 2016.
On the lone goal of the afternoon, junior forward Mary Reilly (Chula Vista/Hilltop HS) latched onto a loose ball and entered the penalty area before hitting a low shot that looked like it may have been heading across the goal line anyway. McNutt made sure from can't-miss range for her first of 2017, giving Reilly her second assist.
Redshirt sophomore Angelica Ramos did not have to make a single save to post her fourth individual shutout of the season and second on the weekend. Junior Haley Crook had seven stops for the Warriors. UCSD held a 20-5 bulge in shots taken.
Junior winger Summer Bales had the day's first real scoring chance for the hosts, finding the crossbar with an ambitious effort in the 16th minute. Up 1-0, UCSD came out for the second half and had three decent opportunities at some breathing room within the first five minutes, with senior central midfielder Elisa Martinez (El Cajon/Francis Parker School) going high twice after Crook saved from Reilly.
Reilly then took a nice pass from McNutt in the 57th and fired away, only for Crook to tip the attempt out for a corner kick. Within three minutes, Crook went down to her left to again turn away Reilly, who had run onto a stellar through ball by Natalie Saddic (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS) prior to shooting.
Unable to find a second to clinch all three points, UCSD was still able to see the result out. The mood was dampened, however, by a 63rd-minute injury to fourth-year senior right back and team tri-captain Makenzie Brito.
UCSD travels to Cal State Dominguez Hills for a primetime affair at 7 p.m. in Carson on Friday, Sept. 22, and then to Cal State LA on Sunady, Sept. 24.
Triton Notes: The Tritons have won 16 consecutive CCAA contests and 22 in a row against CCAA opposition, since a 1-0 loss at Sonoma State on Oct. 18, 2015 ... UCSD has held a 60-5 scoring advantage in those 22 games, and trailed in just one ... Jordyn McNutt's goal was the 16th of her career and sixth game-winner ... The Tritons are a perfect 5-0 at home in 2017 ... UCSD has now won five straight against Stanislaus State, with shutouts in three straight and four of those five.
