No. 19 Warhawks tie No. 20 Macalester
After 110 minutes of play on a warm Saturday afternoon at Fiskum Field in Whitewater, the No. 19 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team's match against No. 20 Macalester ended in a 1-1 tie. The Warhawks and Scots are now both 1-0-1 this season.
The Warhawks had an opportunity to score the first goal in the ninth minute of play, but Justin Stanko (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North)'s header hit the crossbar.
Macalester fired a shot on goal in the 30th minute but Warhawk goalkeeper Chris Lucatorto (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) was there to make the save and the teams entered halftime scoreless.
Macalester midfielder Tristan Springer fired a shot on goal two minutes into the second half, but Lucatorto again made the save. Unfortunately the rebound landed at the feet of Colby King who punched it in to give the Scots a 1-0 lead.
Michael Salm (Grafton, Wis./Grafton) aided in tying the game when he recorded his third assist of the season on a throw-in that found Justin Stanko (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North)'s head. Stanko flicked it in to tie the game.
The teams shared possession the rest of the half, but neither team could get a quality shot on goal.
Whitewater had the best opportunity to score in the first overtime. Jordan Kayser (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn)took a corner kick with twenty seconds remaining, but a header by Stanko sailed just wide.
Dylan Hottsmith (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) almost ended the game in the 104th minute when he broke free and had a good look at the goal, but the Scot keeper stopped it and the game ended in a tie.
The match was played very evenly with both teams recording 17 shots.
Head Coach Tony Guinn remarked after the game, "Macalester is a quality team in a very tough Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. This is a good outcome. We must focus on the big picture."
UW-W will get three full days off before traveling to Lisle, Illinois to take on Benedictine University at 7 p.m. on September 7.
