No. 21 Blazers Drop 1-0 Decision To Kentucky
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The No. 21 UAB men’s soccer team fell to the Kentucky Wildcats, 1-0, Wednesday night at West Campus Field.
The Blazers and Wildcats played a scoreless first half with a combined 10 shots through 45 minutes before Kentucky took the lead just after halftime.
Bryan Celis put Kentucky up, 1-0, in the 55th minute on what would be the game-winning goal. UAB (6-4-1, 1-1 C-USA) created opportunities in the second half, but couldn’t generate any offense against the Wildcats.
“Sometimes I think it’s just soccer,” head coach Mike Getman said. “I think we outplayed them completely in the second half. We had plenty of great chances, but the ball just wouldn’t go in. I thought they had one chance and it goes in the net. Sometimes it is just soccer. A sport where you score 20 goals or 20 points, one doesn’t make that big of a difference, but tonight that one was everything.”
After getting off just three shots in the opening half, UAB came back for 10 in the second half to outshoot Kentucky 13-11. Both teams took seven corner kicks as four of the Blazers’ shots were on target.
UAB returns to the field on Saturday in Columbia, S.C. for a C-USA matchup against South Carolina.
