No. 22 Marquette Defeats Syracuse, 2-0
MILWAUKEE, Wisc. – The Syracuse women’s soccer team wrapped up the road portion of its regular season schedule with a 2-0 setback at No. 22/15 Marquette on Sunday, Oct. 14. The Orange goes to 8-6-2 overall, 5-3-1 in BIG EAST play. The Golden Eagles improve to 12-2-2, including an 8-0-1 mark in conference action.
Junior goalkeeper Brittany Anghel (East Meadow, N.Y.) tied her career high with 10 saves. She now has 217 career saves, which rank third on Syracuse’s all-time record list.
Marquette applied offensive pressure early, earning two corner kicks in the first three minutes of play. The Golden Eagles took the lead on their second corner kick at the 2:37 mark. Maegan Kelly served the ball into the box, where Rachel Brown found the back of the net on a header for her first goal of the season.
Syracuse’s offense was more dangerous in the second half. The Orange manufactured six shots and earned a corner kick, but couldn’t take advantage of its opportunities while Marquette scored an insurance tally in the 57th minute. Lisa Philbin’s initial shot was stopped by Anghel, who couldn’t control the ball. Taylor Madigan collected the rebound and scored.
The Golden Eagles outshot the Orange, 18-8, and had nine corner kicks to one for SU. Amanda Engel finished with two saves for Marquette.
Syracuse closes out the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 4:30 against St. John’s at the SU Soccer Stadium. The Orange’s senior class will be honored in a pregame ceremony. There is no admission charge.
